There is something special about coming home on a cool fall evening and being greeted by a wagging tail, a happy bark or a cat who has already decided your favorite chair belongs to them.

If your home has room for another four-legged family member this fall, there are local animals waiting to meet you.

The Calhoun County Animal Center works throughout the year caring for dogs and cats that find their way to the shelter and helping them make the journey into permanent, loving homes.

The nonprofit shelter at 165 S. Union Street in Battle Creek works with the community to care for animals while connecting adoptable pets with new families.

This October, Pet Supplies Plus Battle Creek is giving neighbors an easy way to lend a hand.

Throughout the month, shoppers can round up their purchases at checkout, with those contributions supporting the Calhoun County Animal Center.

A few cents may not seem like much on one shopping trip, but when an entire community gets involved, those small gifts can add up to meaningful support for local animals in need.

The locally owned and operated Pet Supplies Plus is located at 1791 W. Columbia Ave. in Battle Creek and has served area pet owners for more than a decade.

Supporting local rescue efforts is a natural fit for a neighborhood pet store, where customers already understand just how quickly a dog or cat becomes part of the family.

Financial support is only one way to make a difference.

The Calhoun County Animal Center has dogs and cats looking for homes, and one of them could be the forever friend your family has been waiting for.

If adopting is not right for your household at the moment, you can still help by donating, volunteering, supporting local rescue fundraisers or sharing adoptable animals with friends and family.

Sometimes helping an animal reach the right person is the first step toward finding that animal a permanent home.
