Animal removal in Battle Creek puts several dogs in care
Authorities say veterinary exams are planned as an animal-cruelty investigation continues
Several dogs are now in protective care after authorities removed them from a residence on Northeast Capital Avenue in Battle Creek. The case began Monday when a report raised concern about a stray, visibly underweight dog believed to be connected to the home. That initial welfare concern led investigators to seek and execute a search warrant at the property.
Officials said every dog found at the residence was removed. All of the animals had fleas, while one appeared to have a skin condition and two raised weight-related concerns. Veterinary examinations are scheduled to document the dogs’ conditions and determine what care each animal needs.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office identified two people as suspects but had not announced formal charges when the removal was reported. Investigators said they plan to seek animal-cruelty charges as the evidence is reviewed. The removal protects the animals while the legal process continues.
Authorities also reported seeing two firearms in plain view inside the residence. Because a one-year-old child was present and a 16-year-old was associated with the home, investigators said they also expect to pursue suspected violations of Michigan’s firearm secure-storage law. No additional conclusions about those allegations should be drawn until prosecutors review the case.
Battle Creek Animal Control responds to animal-related concerns inside the city and works with the Calhoun County Animal Center for the care of impounded dogs and cats. The animal center lists shelter hours, contact information and adoption resources for residents who want to help local pets. Michigan also maintains a directory of registered animal shelters for people looking for legitimate facilities and services.
This remains an active investigation, so the dogs’ medical findings and any charging decisions may change the picture. Residents with firsthand information can contact investigators or submit information through Silent Observer of Calhoun County. People who suspect neglect should avoid confronting an owner and instead document what they safely can for the appropriate authorities.
Why were the dogs removed from the Battle Creek home? Authorities said a report about an emaciated dog led to further concerns, a search warrant and the removal of all dogs at the residence.
What conditions did officials report? They reported fleas on every dog, an apparent skin condition on one animal and weight-related concerns involving two dogs.
What happens next in the animal-removal case? The dogs are expected to receive veterinary examinations while investigators seek review of possible animal-cruelty and firearm safe-storage charges. |
