All Species Kinship: 24 Years of Helping Battle Creek Animals |
|
It started with a drive down Main Street in 2001. The founders of All Species Kinship, known as ASK, were passing through Battle Creek's historic Post Addition neighborhood when they saw something that stopped them in their tracks. Dogs chained to rickety wooden doghouses, sitting hopelessly in the middle of winter without even straw for insulation.
Those dogs, treated as permanent lawn ornaments, deserved better. And so ASK was born.
Twenty-four years later, All Species Kinship continues its mission of saving domestic fowl, rescuing injured wildlife, and renewing hope for outside dogs through proactive street outreach. Their work has touched thousands of lives, both animal and human, right here in Battle Creek.
What makes ASK unique is their approach. They do not wait for animals to be surrendered. Instead, they go directly into neighborhoods, meeting pet owners where they are and offering support without judgment. For dogs living on chains, this means providing straw, doghouses, food, and medical care. It means building relationships with owners and showing them a better way to care for their pets.
The wildlife rescue program is equally important. Injured wild animals, from birds to small mammals, find a path to healing through ASK's network of rehabilitators. The goal is always to return these animals to the wild when possible, giving them a second chance at life in their natural habitat.
Domestic fowl, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, are another focus. Many people do not realize that farm birds need rescue too. Whether abandoned, neglected, or surrendered, these birds find sanctuary through ASK's programs.
The philosophy at ASK is simple: kindness to all kinds. They refuse to let perfect get in the way of better. Every straw bale delivered, every doghouse provided, every animal rescued is a step in the right direction. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
ASK operates on donations and volunteer support. They are not a large organization with a big budget, but they are effective because they are boots on the ground, doing the work that others overlook. Their in-home meet-and-greet requirement for adoptions ensures that every animal goes to a safe, suitable home.
If you want to support ASK's work, there are many ways to help. Financial donations keep the programs running. Volunteering your time makes a direct impact. And simply spreading the word about their mission helps raise awareness about animal welfare in our community.
Battle Creek is lucky to have organizations like All Species Kinship working tirelessly for those who cannot speak for themselves. For 24 years, they have been a voice for the voiceless, and they show no signs of slowing down.
