Deputies Rescue 71 Dogs from Hazardous Home, Overwhelming Local Animal Shelter

Calhoun County Sheriff's Office uncovers severe animal neglect in Newton Township residence

In a distressing discovery, Calhoun County Sheriff's deputies rescued 71 dogs from a severely unsanitary home in Newton Township on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

Responding to a report of animal neglect on 8 1/2 Mile Road, deputies found the three-bedroom residence overwhelmed with animal waste and numerous pets in poor health.

The conditions were described as extremely poor, with feces and urine throughout the house, creating a hazardous environment for both humans and animals.

The 68-year-old homeowner consented to a search and voluntarily surrendered all animals.

Initially, 68 dogs were removed and taken to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter.

Deputies returned the following day to rescue three additional dogs.

The shelter, already near capacity, faced significant challenges accommodating the sudden influx.

Executive Director Jackie Martens noted that prior to the rescue, only four kennels were available.

Staff utilized storage kennels and doubled up dogs to manage the situation.

Despite limited resources, the shelter staff is committed to providing care for the rescued animals.

Community support has been vital, with residents donating dog food and supplies.

Martens expressed deep gratitude for the community's generosity, emphasizing that without their help, managing the crisis would be impossible.

In light of this incident, the shelter is appealing for continued donations and volunteers to assist with the care of the animals.

Charges for felony animal abuse and torture are pending review by the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office.

Additionally, Adult Protective Services has been contacted to ensure the well-being of the homeowner.

This case underscores the ongoing issue of animal hoarding and the critical need for community vigilance and support for local shelters.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected cases of animal neglect and consider adopting or fostering pets to alleviate shelter overcrowding.

For those interested in supporting the Calhoun County Animal Shelter, donations of dog food, supplies, or financial contributions can be made directly to the shelter.

Volunteers are also welcomed to assist with the care and rehabilitation of the rescued dogs.

Community involvement is crucial in ensuring these animals find safe and loving homes.

In related news, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced grants earlier this year to support registered animal shelters across the state.

These funds aim to enhance shelter capabilities in caring for homeless pets and improving adoption rates.

While the Calhoun County Animal Shelter was not listed among the recent grant recipients, the availability of such funding highlights the importance of community and governmental support in addressing animal welfare issues.

Residents are reminded that contributions to the Animal Welfare Fund on state tax returns directly benefit local shelters and the animals they serve.

As the community rallies to support the shelter and the rescued dogs, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities of pet ownership and the impact of collective action in addressing animal welfare challenges.

For those considering pet adoption, now is an opportune time to provide a loving home to an animal in need.

Contact the Calhoun County Animal Shelter for more information on available pets and adoption procedures.
