In a significant animal welfare intervention, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office rescued 68 dogs from a residence in Newton Township on Tuesday, October 21, following reports of potential animal neglect.
Deputies arrived at the single-story, three-bedroom home located in the 8000 block of 8½ Mile Road around 11:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they encountered the 68-year-old homeowner, who consented to a search of the premises.
Inside, authorities discovered hazardous living conditions characterized by substantial amounts of animal waste and a pervasive odor of urine. Numerous dogs and cats were found in poor health, and a deceased dog was located in the backyard.

To ensure the homeowner's well-being, Adult Protective Services was contacted. The case remains under investigation, with potential charges of felony animal abuse and animal torture pending review by the Calhoun County Prosecutorâs Office.
