On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at approximately 11:23 a.m., the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of potential animal neglect in the 8000 block of 8½ Mile Road in Newton Township.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered the homeowner, a 68-year-old woman, who permitted a search of her residence.

Inside, authorities discovered unsanitary and hazardous living conditions, characterized by significant accumulations of animal waste and a pervasive odor of urine.

Numerous dogs and cats were found in poor health, and a deceased dog was located in the backyard.

In total, approximately 68 dogs were removed from the single-story, three-bedroom home.

The homeowner voluntarily surrendered all animals, which were then transported to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter for evaluation, medical treatment, and care.

Adult Protective Services was contacted to ensure the well-being of the homeowner.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office received assistance at the scene from the Battle Creek Police Department, Newton Township Fire Department, and Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority.

The case remains under investigation, with charges of felony animal abuse and animal torture anticipated pending review by the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office.

Community members with information are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Curtis Smith at 269-781-0880 or provide an anonymous tip through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
